Wood fences are consistently among our most popular residential fence materials. They’re reliable, highly customizable and add a classic, rustic vibe to your yard that’s as American as an apple pie at a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert.
When starting your wood fence build, it’s important to choose the type of wood that best fits your project needs. It’s sort of like dating, in a sense that every wood style has green, red and beige flags to consider before you commit to one.
We’ve assembled a quick guide on the three main wood categories below. You can thank us by installing a really expensive project.
Treated Pine
Why We Love It:
Copperwood and green-treated pine fences are tough, highly resistant to insect damage, decay, and rot. Like George Clooney, the fence ages from a tan green to a tasteful, silvery gray as it ages. You can also expect a lower upfront cost and easy repairs.
Things To Consider:
Upon installation, the wood is tinted green as evidence of the preservative, but in time the color will change and the oil used as treatment has a noticeable smell and typically lasts from a few weeks to a few months. It is safe to smell as well as touch, but may be dangerous if ingested (particularly for pets). For green-treated pine fence products, boards will appear white with a green tint initially, but will weather to gray over time. Natural Cedar
Why We Love It:
New natural cedar fences have a lovely red tinge that can brighten and rejuvenate your space. If you’re looking to make your neighbors jealous with a fancy, intricate lattice pattern, natural cedar’s softer construction allows for design flexibility. Don’t be fooled: natural cedar is still rock solid and highly durable.
Things To Consider:
Natural Cedar will require stain and sealing to maintain its appearance. Like all wood styles, Natural Cedar also requires ongoing maintenance.
Post & Rail Fences
Why We Love It:
Post & Rail fences provide an excellent aesthetic facelift to your yard, and can help you live that suburban rancher fantasy. Don’t be alarmed if the word “howdy” becomes part of your vocabulary. You’ll also be able to maintain visibility and avoid enclosing your property.
Things To Consider:
Though we can install welded wiring for added protection from smaller critters, those looking for maximum security or privacy best look elsewhere. And, all together now, all wood fences require regular maintenance.
